A couple of days ago during the most recent Killer Instinct stream from PlayXBLA, I asked the developers a question about the story for the upcoming game. Specifically, I asked if it would be following the events of Killer Instinct and Killer Instinct 2/Gold. If you were hoping to find out what happened after the defeat Gargos, then I’m afraid that will have to be left to your imagination, as the story will be a reboot.

The main reason for not continuing after KI 2 is because they wouldn’t exactly know where to begin. There were so many different endings to go by that would be difficult to decided which exactly would be the true ending. So instead. Double Helix said they will be taking specific story elements of the characters that they liked and will be utilizing those for their new rebooted story. This, of course, is fairly obvious. Chief Thunder is still searching for his brother Eagle, Glacius still crash landed on Earth, Sabrewulf is still attempting to cure himself of Lycanthropy and so forth.

I was honestly hoping for a follow-up, but I think Double Helix made the right decision here. With the way the game is being developed and so many years having passed by, a reboot is likely what the story needs. Plus, they are doing a huge fan service by ensuring that the old characters are maintaining their popular and well-known backgrounds. That, to me, was always my one big concern.

So what do you all think? Are you glad it’s receiving a reboot or would you have preferred a follow-up to the previous games? Share your opinions in the comments below!

  1. They at least need to focus the story around Orchid and Jago being separated siblings. Also the fact that most characters in the story are fighting against Ultratech. Either way, I’ve been waiting a long time for this game to be brought into the new console area. Nintendo most definitely dropped the ball letting Microsoft take this game on.

  2. I think there could be a follow up because people would like to know what happens after Gargos dies. Possibly there could a new story stating that time goes back to the present and a new villain aligns with Ultratech and plans to kill everyone who opposes them. Since new people are in the game, they would have to fit somewhere in the storyline. I feel that there could be the originals each having their own goals.

  3. I wonder if Double Helix will ever do a fan contest for a chance to design a character to be a part of this new storyline?

  4. Basically I’m just glad that Killer Instinct finally got a reboot and finally being developed overall. Same is true for the storyline and I now think Double Helix made a smart decision in rewriting and overall rebooting the series’ storyline as well

  5. I always felt this game was intended as a reboot than a sequel. I was right. And I’m also happy. This way they can re-write history and erase the awful mess that was KI2’s storyline.

  6. The only weak point of Killer Instinct IMO was the storyline because it was too disjointed and nothing really made any sense as to why it the tournament was happening in the first place. Plus, a lot of stupid things happened to the characters in KI2. TJ Combo having the eye patch because it got clawed put by Riptor apparently. Both Combo and Saberwulf having the cybernetic arm attachments. It was getting a little too cartoony.

So I think a hard reset was a smart idea by Double-Helix. So far (except for Orchid’s costume) I love everything they’ve done.

  7. I’m glad that they are doing this. I always did wonder who won against Gargos and if they made it home. I’ve been a fan of the series forever and I cant wait to play it. Glacius all the way!
