Combo Breaker Training Mode

One of the most unique and fun aspects of Killer Instinct’s combat system is its combo breaker system that gives you the ability to bring your opponent’s combo to a halt by pressing a punch and kick button of the same strength as their attack. Although the input itself is simple, breaking a combo requires you to pay very close attention to timing, animation, and pattern recognition. If you’re a new player or an experienced fighting game veteran, understanding how to effectively break combos is a crucial part of making you a significantly better Killer Instinct player.

How It Works
You begin Combo Breaker Training by choosing an opponent. When the match begins the opponent performs combos. Your goal is to get to the point where you’re able to quickly identify your AI opponent’s moves and consistently break them. Because we want your attention to remain focused on breaking, don’t focus on attacking. Just break and break well! Mastering this mode will allow you to significantly step up you game.

Customization!
The first thing you’ll notice when entering Combo Breaker Training is that it allows you to choose from several AI difficulties. These are unique to this mode and are based on our observation of real world combo habits. Regardless of where you feel your skill level is, we recommend working your way up from beginner to Ultra. There are several lessons so learn from each difficulty and your goal should be to consistently break against them all. Let’s discuss each difficulty level.

Your goal for consistently breaking against this AI is to carefully pay attention to each attack in the combo until you figure out the combo’s strength. Once you figure out the strength, break the next attack!

Intermediate AI: A bit better at comboing than beginner, but also makes a crucial mistake: This AI always follows up a linker with an auto double of the same strength. To be effective against this AI you must recognize the strength of their linker and break the autodouble that follows.

Advanced AI: Requires mastery of two key aspects of combo breaking, great timing and animation recognition. This AI does not perform manuals, but does a diverse mix of autodoubles, linkers, and shadow moves. Because this is an AI we’re going to recommend putting tendencies and educated guessing aside. Focusing on moves that you can break on reaction. Those would be medium, heavy and shadow moves.

Ultra: Have fun with this one! This AI is a combination of very clever scripting by our gameplay engineers and several pre-canned combo’s created by the design team. You’re Killer!

Combo data displays text that notes the type of move being performed against you. By turning this on you will know if a move is a linker, autodouble, shadow or manual.

Combo Breaker Strength Icons are new to Combo Breaker training. These icons display the two buttons that you should press during an attack to break a combo.
