In a recent interview, Ken Lobb discussed why Double Helix was chosen to develop the new Killer Instinct, gives a brief chat lesson on his history with the franchise, and teases what’s in store for KI’s future:

“Double Helix gave us their best pitch for Killer Instinct and that was a prototype that was playable. I was deeply involved in Killer Instinct 1 and 2 working at Nintendo with Rare. I designed the core combo system and worked closely with them on basically every character on the game and all the animations. It’s an IP that I love dearly, both from the memory of working with these guys and also because it’s kind of fun to go to the arcade and win a lot.

“I was able to bring some of that back. [Creative director] Adam Isgreen ran the product internally, and we had a bunch of great designers working with Double Helix to make the game. That was a game where I went literally no more than two or three days without looking at it for pretty much the whole time it was in development. I love the genre, so I cared a lot about making sure the game was balanced.”

Ken also teased Edge-Online by claiming that Microsoft has plans for the series that “players will be happy with.”

Sounds like Microsoft intends for Killer Instinct to remain in Xbox’s future quite some time, doesn’t it? Discuss in the comments and the KIC forums!

  1. Hope Iron Galaxy update the visual aesthetic of the game to resemble the original more, its almost the only thing the game lacks apart from adult content.

    1. Speaking of adult content I just noticed No Mercies/Ultimates appear to be confirmed for Season 2 of KI

  2. I only wish the game was as dark as the original, it’s just too friendly to really excite me like the old game did. The fighting mechanics are fantastic in the reboot but the look and feel of the game from a visual design standpoint is really below average and childish even.

    1. Now from what I heard some say KI3 is now considered to be the darkest among the KI games in the Killer Instinct series. As for KI3’s visual design I find it to be fantastic, amazing, awesome, and stupendous

  3. Hated the wait !!’as a hard core killer instinct gamer this game was the only reason I bought the xbox one loving the new game I almost never play the old one y’all have done an amazing job on this game

  4. Excellent work and input and overall job on making the all-new KI/KI3 and thanks so much for bringing back the classic fighting game series from its long (17 years specifically) dormancy and hiatus for all us KI fans. We appreciate the hard work u put into reviving and you’re currently doing on Killer Instinct and above all, again, for all of us KI fans 🙂

  5. Ken Lobb is freaking awesome. Thanks for making Killer Instinct.
Now, Ken Lobb needs to make a pressure on Microsoft so they make KI2 be ported to Xbox One.

    1. I agree: Ken IS awesome. And again thanks for making as well as bringing back Killer Instinct.
Tomorrow is the day Fulgore and Story/Arcade Mode are release. Can’t wait for those including seeing some of the teasers within Story Mode 🙂

      1. Yes! I wonder what time of which timezone will be available to download the update. Because in my timezone, to April 9, I just need to wait 5 more hours.

        1. That’s good and cool. You won’t have to wait too long for that also. Just a few more hours to go before they finally come out 🙂

  6. Will next for retro classic stage??? we want have fun for ki #1 badass thank u so much

    1. That would be awesome, but Double Helix says that’s classics stages are not coming back, but I don’t know what new developer thinks about that.
