Killer Instinct Xbox One composer Mick Gordon and sound designer Jean-Edouard Miclot will be hosting a KI panel at the Game Developer’s Conference (GDC) later today from 2PM-3PM PST. Mick and Jean will discuss the challenges of composing and designing audio for an iconic fighting game franchise for a next-gen console. Below is the official synopsis on what to fully expect from their panel…

After a 17-year hiatus, Killer Instinct came back as an Xbox One launch title. This presented the audio team with two challenges: be true to the series and deliver a next-gen audio experience. This lecture will demonstrate how these creative and technical challenges were overcome by asking three questions: What made the original sound great (analysis)? What audio experience does the player expect from a next-gen fighting game (anticipation)? And what doesn’t the player expect and how can we evolve the series (surprise)? You will learn what went right and what went wrong, including mix choices, loudness standards, the dynamic soundtrack, designing around 60fps, contractor budgets and the creative use of surround.

Huge thanks to Mick Gordon for providing the information!

  1. Sounds good and all but lets finish what was started and put in arcade story mode and Fulgore already.

    1. Now don’t worry. They will officially arrive soon enough and at the same time it WILL happen. As this one person perfectly puts it “All good things take time”
