Following on the heels of the shocking need that Amazon has acquired Double Helix, Microsoft Studios head Phil Spencer and Microsoft Creative Director Adam Isgreene have both confirmed that development on Killer Instinct Xbox One will continue. Phil Spencer assured fans via Twitter that they were prepared for the transition and that the franchise is in good hands. To quote: “Our internal KI team is still here and franchise is in good hands. We had a plan in place for this transition.”

So while Double Helix will no longer be the primarily developer for KI in the future, it is reassuring to know that the franchise will continue on regardless of today’s news. What “internal” team Phil is referring to, however, is another story altogether. Could it be Code Mystics, developers of the KI Classic port? Or perhaps in the strongest sense of irony, Rare takes over development? Time will tell. In the mean time, share your own thoughts on this news with us in the comments below!

  1. I trust that these guys know what they are doing…..but I have to admit I am nervous. Eager to see what develops

    1. Yeah, same here. You and me both. Let’s hope that the new developer DON’T mess up Killer Instinct. And hopefully the awesome and wicked composer Mick Gordon will be back on board once AGAIN for KI’s awesome and amazing as well as epic theme songs

  2. Of course the stream was canceled! What is going on? They really need to release an official statement already, waiting for a character isn’t as bad as not knowing what is going to happen to this bgame development wise.

  3. Ki is made… adding characters is super easy!

Rare never made a fighting game

Double helix never made a fighting game

I heard you All SCREAM when double helix were announced to make this. … You all have very little faith. Nothing has changed.

    1. Wait. I thought Rare developed Killer Instinct. Or was it Nintendo that actually made and released the game?

  4. Microsoft is filled with a bunch of retards they should have purchased double helix, they have more money than god

  5. An acquisition like this takes several months to execute which would have involved financial and legal due diligence etc. That being said, both DH and MS would have known about this and a plan put in place. I don’t think MS would have invested a ton of money in reinvigorating a beloved franchise only to have it fail 3 months post release! Especially, that KI is an important franchise to the XB1 platform. I’m sure MS understands the PR nightmare to be if continued development of KI goes south.

We just have to wait and see what happens. That being said, I won’t be surprised if MS tap key talent from DH that worked on the game such as Mike, David or Rich.

Stay tuned folks I’m sure there’s lots more info to come!

  6. Interesting points:

Killer Instinct was made with Double Helix’s engine. That means either MS will have to license their engine, or rebuild the game from scratch.
What makes Killer Instinct special is the carefully designed gameplay mechanics that the folks at Double Helix have developed. It takes years to master game design, especially fighting game design, and that can’t simply be handed over to another team with success.

    1. I don’t think the engine for that ‘particular’ game would be an issue of acquiring from Double-helix assuming they even own it. If Microsoft funded the development through and through then that means the KI engine belongs to them even if Double-Helix built it.

      1. Which means there SHOULD be no problem especially with the continued development of Killer Instinct for that matter

      2. Nope, you’re wrong. The HEXEngine is Double Helix’s internal engine and this is a big issue. You can’t just swap engines…

        1. No you cannot swap engines, but you can swap sprites and if the core members of the team that developed Killer Instinct for the XB1 remaining with Microsoft (which is what was implied) then they can very easily make another engine that mirrors the HEX. Possibly a better one.

This is not an issue at all. It’s not like those guys are the only ones who know how to do this. KI’s game mechanics are impressive but far from perfect. For all we know season 2 could have even better fight mechanics.

          1. Season 2 may even bring back (hopefully) No Mercies/Danger Moves as well as Stage Finishers which are among the defining features and characteristics of the Killer Instinct series. And of course, both the old and new characters

          2. Clearly, you have never made a game. You have no idea what an engine is. You have no idea about this situation. You have no idea that you have, no idea…

  7. This is indeed really good news overall. So that means Season 2 of Killer Instinct WILL be confirm soon as well. And perhaps even Rare and Code Mystics will BOTH work together on the development of KI. Who knows? Like they just said “Time will tell”

      1. Well according to Double Helix Killer Instinct did very WELL and overall became very SUCCESSFUL. So u need not worry about that anymore. And that means, in turn, development on KI WILL continue again according to DH
