In 1963, Colombia Pictures released a critically acclaimed movie titled Jason and the Argonauts. The film was about a man named Jason (Todd Armstrong) who is on a quest to find the ancient Golden Fleece. Whilst on his adventure, he faces many trials and tribulations such as battling massive creatures and meeting mythical gods like Zeus and Hera. Like many movies of its era, it was filmed using stop-animation graphics, a type of filmography that was really popular for its time.
In one portion of the movie, Jason battles against an army of undead skeleton warriors wielding swords and shields. Fast forward some thirty years later, and those very skeletons became the inspiration for Rare’s creation of Spinal. Below is a very old promotional trailer for the movie. Towards the end, you will see the aforementioned skeletons.
See the resemblance? Another fact that you may or may not have known about is that Spinal’s original name was ‘Argo’ before being changed to the name you know him as today. So if you ever have the opportunity, check out the full movie! It’s really interesting and definitely the time to watch.

Interesting info
Almost every character in KI was based on pop culture icons, namely movie characters and creatures. I once did a little article on this in the KI forums:

Maybe for those 3rd alts Spinal can get a true Classic Jason Argo skin.
