Microsoft’s weekly Killer Instinct stream that aired yesterday was an hour specifically dedicated the original arcade version of Killer Instinct. The build of the game they were playing was on Xbox One, the emulated port that comes with the purchase of the Ultra Edition or Ultimate Pin Edition of the new Killer Instinct. The game arcade port is the same as you remember it to be when it comes to gameplay. The combos, No Mercies, Humilations, the classic soundtrack… It’s all there and fully intact. There are a few new editions specific to this port, however, that was not in the original game as well as a few changes. Let’s analyze what’s new and what has changed…

Achievements- There will be around thirty Achievements, totaling to 1,000 Gamerscore. Some of the Achievements will be hard to unlock, being specifically tailored to diehard KI fans. One currently known Achievement is called ‘My First Ultra’, which is worth 20 Gamerscore and unlocked once you’ve performed your first Ultra Combo.

Game Recording- Every played match is instantly recorded via Xbox One’s built-in DVR. This feature will allow you to go back and replay your previous matches, be it for bragging rights or perhaps learning new strategies to play when fighting against your friends.

Personal Screenshots- I’m not entirely sure what you would do with them, but you are capable of snapping your own in-game screenshots.

Unlockable Artwork- There are various pieces of character artwork that can be unlocked when certain conditions have been met. An example is artwork for each individual character.

Two Playable Versions- The arcade port is broken down into two different versions: ‘Classic’ and ‘Final’. The ‘Classic’ version of the game is the initial release of KI to the arcades that had several popular bugs and glitches, such as Cinder’s infinite combo. The ‘Final’ version is updated version of the game that has the bugs and glitches removed, a process that originally required nearly 17,000 Killer Instinct arcades to be located and updated manually.

Overhauled Menu- The menu system has been completely overhauled and looks far better and cleaner than before. It’s also much easier to navigate and reflects naturally all of new additional features.

  1. Is the game cleaned up and upscaled to 1080p though? I have KI on the MAME EMU and it doesn’t exact look too nice on an HDTV. It’s not bad but it certainly could use a remaster job.
