This article is a collaboration between Killer Instinct Central founders Daniel and Amir

It has been nearly three months now since Killer Instinct Xbox One’s announcement at Microsoft’s E3 2013 press conference and a plethora of information on the new game has become available since then. Amir and I decided we’d gather together absolutely every piece of information we could gather about the game and combine it all into one enormous post. Here is our collaborative effort of informing you all about everything there is to know currently about the new Killer Instinct!

Development
Killer Instinct began development in September 2012, the same month that Microsoft publicly announced the renewal of the KI trademark. Microsoft approached several different developers about the project and selected Double Helix when they delivered an actual, playable build of the game.

The development team consists of game industry veterans with previous experience in the fighting game genre. They have worked on titles such as Skull Girls, Weaponlord, and Street Fighter II: Turbo. Most importantly, the creator of Killer Instinct, Ken Lobb, is leading the game’s development.

Microsoft and Double Helix intend to develop the game in ‘Rounds’. Each year will introduce a new round of characters and downloadable content. If the game is well received and meets their financial expectations, then Killer Instinct will be in continuous development throughout the duration of Xbox One’s life cycle.

Release Date & Pricing
Killer Instinct will be released simultaneously with the Xbox One on November 22nd, 2013 as a digital download. See this post for pricing details.

Characters
Killer Instinct will launch on November 22 with six available characters. Announced characters currently consist of Jago, Sabre Wulf, Thunder, Glacius, and new to the KI universe, Sadira. Two additional characters will be available as downloadable content at a later date.

Gameplay
The gameplay for the new Killer Instinct is similar in comparison to the original games. The primary focus is still on the franchise’s groundbreaking Combo system, openers and linkers, Combo Breakers, and so forth. New elements to the gameplay are Counter Breakers, unique character Instincts, and Shadow Moves. The “combat triangle” of the fighting genre is also being introduced in this game with each character fitting in a specific category within that triangle: zoner, rushdown, and/or grappler. This is significant as the previous titles featured only rushdown gameplay.

Music
The music is being composed by Mick Gordon with feedback being provided by the original Killer Instinct composer, Robin Beanland. You can get a sample of Mick’s music in our exclusive Killer Instinct Xbox One Music Suite.

Story Mode
Not very much is known at the moment about Killer Instinct’s story mode. What is known is that it will be released after the game is launched in November. As not all characters in the first season will be launched in November it makes sense for the story to be released at a later time.

When asked about multiple endings at the 2013 Evo Killer Instinct panel, Double Helix responded that they are looking into multiple endings depending on performance. When asked about the story in the same panel Double Helix said that this is a new chapter, the saga of 1 and 2 are over and this is a brand new chapter in the Killer Instinct world.

Multiplayer
Killer Instinct will feature local and online multiplayer. As for online netcode, Killer Instinct will be using a GGPO/rollback style netcode. During the 2013 Evo Killer Instinct panel it was confirmed that Double Helix would take this approach with the netcode and that the creator of GGPO is helping them develop it.

Killer Instinct will also be taking advantage of Xbox One’s Smart Matching capabilities for online multiplayer. You can search for your perfect match based on criteria such as skill or common interests, play a different game or watch a movie and wait for the match to be set up. Once Smart Match finds you an opponent you will receive a notification that the game is ready.

Training/Practice Modes
Killer Instinct will have an in depth training mode to help people grasp the language and mechanics of Killer Instinct. Being that Killer Instinct is a very unique fighter the developers want to make sure everyone can dive into the game quickly. The training mode will teach users what an opener, auto, manual, linker and ender are and how to put them all together for max damage. Last mentioned there will be about forty lessons in training mode.

Something unique that will be allowed in practice mode is visible hitboxes. Not only will the user will be able to turn on hitboxes but also set visible the inputs that they are pushing. You will also be able to see where the frames of moves are active and what they’re covering.

Customization
In previous Killer Instincts, it was possible to select a few different alternate colors for each character. That feature returns in KI for Xbox One with even more color options than before. There will also classic character skins available as downloadable content. In addition to alternate colors and skins, a newly added customization option is the ability to accessorize the characters. What accessories will be available is currently unknown, but they can be unlocked using the game’s “Point System”.

Xbox One Features
Killer Instinct will utilize Xbox One’s built-in DVR feature. With this, it will be possible to record and share KI gameplay with other Xbox LIVE subscribers. Live streaming will also be available using Twitch, allowing players to literally broadcast live matches and tournaments at any time.

So there you have it! That should be everything you need to know about the new Killer Instinct in it’s current form. We’ll keep this post updated as new information becomes available down the road, so stay tuned and leave us some comments below on your thoughts about the game!

  1. I hope Killer Instinct 3 story has a gd CG OR CGI ending on the characters.
And have a deep rich story on each of the characters

    1. Right bc the small team developing it, with the small limited time they’ve been given for production should use up they’re limited resources to focus on single player modes and NOT the actual characters/balance/gameplay right? But more single player modes bc that is more important right?

      1. Absolutely! They released a game with no story, endings, or pretty much nothing that the first killer instinct came out with. While I enjoy multiplayer, I like my games to have substance not just flashy moves. Also it’s not as if they released a huge roster of characters, prologues and endings could have been completed. As far as I see they released an incomplete game.
