Let’s go back some 21 years ago to 1994 where Nintendo was gearing up for one of the biggest releases in the history of the company: Donkey Kong Country for the SNES, developed by none other than Rare, the same company that created the Killer Instinct franchise we hold so dear today. As a means of promoting their new upcoming release for November of that year, Nintendo sent out a promotional VHS tape to Nintendo Power subscribers that included what was called Donkey Kong Country Exposed. DKC Exposed delved into the development of the game, showing how it was created, giving the first story information on the title, how the Stamper Bros. (founders of Rare) were able to create the life-like models of Donkey Kong, and much more.

The Donkey Kong Country Exposed video was posted on YouTube a few days ago and I highly recommend you take some time out of your day to watch it. There’s some special appearances by the one-and-only Ken Lobb a few times in the video and at the end you’ll catch a very brief glimpse of an “accidental” walk-in of the classic Killer Instinct game being played!

  1. it gets even more interesting. Killer Instinct is referenced more than once in the sequel Donkey Kong Country 2. for example, in Krazy Kremland, you can see a sign that says “KI Here” with 2 Ki arcade machines at the front entrance. also, when you get hints from Cranky Kong, not only do you see an arcade machine of KI behind him, but also a poster of Chief Thunder on the wall.

  2. Ah yeah, I remember now. Overall a feeling/moment of nostalgia now in regards to that video tape on the making of/behind-the-scenes look of Donkey Kong Country for the Super Nintendo. And I happened to play that game too along with KI1 a LONG time back 🙂

  3. Man, I remember getting a copy of this VHS with one of my Nintendo Power magazines. It got me interested in the DKC series AND KI. Rare was such a powerhouse in those days. It’s good to see both DKC and KI continuing after… over 20 years?? MAN, I’m getting old!!
